Our Services

How We Help

At Step Onward, every request for aid is considered without discrimination on race, gender, religion, sexuality, or nationality.   Our grants and programs committees begin by receiving and vetting referrals to determine if we are the best organization to help the candidate. Through discussions with referring organizations, individuals, and candidates, we strive to fully understand their situation and needs.

We are unique in that we don’t limit our funding to specific needs.  Rather, we aim to fill gaps in needed support as young people age out of other resources. Gaps we cover fall into 3 main areas of aid: Education, Housing, and Health and Wellness.  In addition, we actively mentor our awardees by helping them choose appropriate paths for their higher education keeping in mind the resources that are available to them so that they proceed from a transitional process to total sustainability.

Educational Assistance

  • Gap funding at community colleges and universities and at times provide total tuition books and fees funding in certain circumstances
  • Aid and guidance in the scholarships and grants process when needed or requested
  • Hands-on mentoring and counseling for educational paths forward in institutions of higher learning, trade schools and certifications
  • Assistance with connecting advisors and internal mentors in colleges and interact with guidance counselors when needed for awardees graduating from high school
  • Provide course planning and oversight with harm reduction methods when there is academic probation and help build solutions

Housing Aid

  • Assess housing needs and options with our referring partner organizations, our awardees, and programs and grants committees
  • Fund emergency housing requests within 72 hours especially for families with children with acute illness at Dell Children’s Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Baylor College of Medicine when warranted
  • Provide housing management intervention when issues arise, or eviction is in process to help keep housing stable
  • Fund gap assistance for housing that our awardees already have if a need arises so stabilization can occur

Health and Wellness Resources

  • Provide full or gap funding for health insurance, prescribed medications, trauma informed counseling, and food security when a need is identified
  • Provide referrals for specialized healthcare providers and agencies when the need arises

Interesting Fact

Each year, an estimated 4.2 million youth and young adults experience homelessness, of which 700,000 are unaccompanied minors, meaning they are not part of a family or are accompanied by a parent or guardian. On any given night, approximately 41,000 unaccompanied youth ages 13-25 experience homelessness. Learn more at  NCSL
